Nebraska: More than Corn and I80

Wandering off the main highways is one of our favorite ways to travel so we took 4 days to explore north western Nebraska. Indian summer weather and amazing scenery made for some great memories.

We were headed towards Nebraska National Forest but wanted to stop near the sand hills of Nebraska. Our first scout for camping was a beautiful dispersed site called Grove Lake WMA.

It was still drizzling and cold so we decided to continue westward since our evening activities would not be outdoors.

Long Pine SRA was the perfect spot. Turkey roaming next to the stream at the edge of our camp site. No one else took residence in the 7 other campsites which allowed for a very quiet night!

Quick trip over to Chadron State Park on Sunday. Trying to plan how to watch the Buffalo Bills game and thought State Park with hookups or a bar in town would be our best bet. Neither of these options looked promising upon arrival but Eric had found a dispersed site on top of a mountain above the state park called Black Hills Lookout. Once again a perfect setting with the Bills streaming to our laptop as the sun set and no one else was around.

And the sunrise was spectacular as well

Our next destination in Nebraska is Toadstool geological. We decided to take the road less traveled for our short journey and came upon Whitney lake. Such a beautiful day for a drive.

Toadstool was 13 miles in on a dirt road that paralleled a BNSF line. As we saw the first train I wondered how often then come through. After our night in the campground, the answer is quite often!! And that whistle blows every time!

Toadstool Geologic Park is located in the Oglala National Grassland in far northwestern Nebraska. The park is named after its unusual rock formations, many of which resemble toadstools. We took a nice walk with Nellie to check it out. This place did not disappoint!

Campsites here were easy to come by. Not sure pulling into the grass was allowed but we did it anyway ☀️

On to South Dakota. Great wander in Nebraska. I hope we return again

See you in the road
